Application FAQ

Last updated: 2/29/2008

When can I apply?

Apply between January 2 and March 1, 2008 (Pacific Time). Allow yourself enough time (one hour minimum) to finish your application by 11:59pm on the due date; late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

TOP

Can minors apply?

Sorry, no; applicants must be over 18.

TOP

Do I have to live on campus for six weeks?

Yes. Sorry; no exceptions. Read Kate Wilhelm's Storyteller to understand why fulltime residency is so integral to the Clarion process.

TOP

How much is the application fee?

The fee is $40. It is not refundable. Please pay the fee last, after you have completed the rest of the application process.

TOP

What forms of payment are accepted?

You will pay the application fee to the Clarion Foundation. The Foundation accepts Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. You can also pay using PayPal, or with a check/money order.  Funds must be in US$. Further instructions are posted on the Payment page in RegOnline.

Note: The application fee is not tax deductible.

TOP

Where do I apply for the workshop?

Apply online at www.RegOnline.com/ClarionApp2008. You will be asked for an invitation code. When you are ready to apply, request a code from program coordinator (she will check email periodically on March 1). Include your full name and daytime phone number in your request.

Your application will be considered when you have submitted the following:

  1. Application form.
  2. Scholarship application, if applying for financial aid.
  3. Two short stories that conform to our guidelines.
  4. Non-refundable application fee.

TOP

How do I apply for financial aid?

Fill out the Scholarship section of the application form.  You must submit the financial aid information with the rest of the application materials.  Note that financial need has no bearing on acceptance to the workshop.

TOP

How long does it take to complete the application?

Allow 40-60 minutes minimum. You will be asked to provide personal information,  an emergency contact, and brief answers to the following:

  • Publishing experience (experience is not required)
  • Writing habits
  • What you hope to accomplish at Clarion
  • Employment, income, and debt information for you and your spouse (if applying for  scholarships)
  • How you heard about the workshop
  • Special physical, dietary, and medical needs

TOP

How do I submit my stories?

You will upload them to RegOnline when you fill out the application.

TOP

What are the guidelines for submissions?

Submit two complete short stories, each between 2,500 words and 6,000 words (maximum!) in length. The stories should represent your best fiction work to date.  Clarion is a short-story writing workshop; please do not send screenplays, poetry, essays, or portions of a novel.

Write your name, contact information, and word count on the first page; and write your name and story title at the top of every page.  Start your story immediately after the header information on the first page, i.e. do not include a separate title page.

Formatting: Double-spaced;  one-inch margins; 10-12 point font; PDF or doc file preferred.

TOP

Can I change my answers or  stories after I submit my application?

No. Changes made after you have completed your application will not be considered (your application is "complete" when you have finished all the steps listed in How Do I Apply). You may, however, log back in to RegOnline to update your contact information or withdraw your application.

TOP

What if I have trouble with the online application?

Contact the program coordinator for assistance. UC San Diego office hours are Monday - Friday, 8am-4:30pm Pacific Time. (Note: The university will be closed Dec. 22-Jan. 1, Jan. 21, Feb. 18, and Mar. 28.)

TOP

When will I be notified about acceptance?

We will start notifying applicants about acceptance in mid-March.  Contact the program coordinator if you do not receive notification by March 31.

TOP

How many applicants are accepted?

In 2008 we will accept up to 18 students.

TOP

Do you keep a stand-by list?

Yes.  If we have more qualified applicants than spaces we will create a stand-by list.

TOP

what should I do while waiting to hear about acceptance?

The weeks between acceptance and arrival at Clarion will fly by; start preparing for the workshop as soon as you submit your application. Here are four questions to get you started, and some tips for researching the answers:

What is the workshop like? Read Kate Wilhelm's Storyteller.

How do I get the most from the workshop? Read the instructors' best-known works; write questions about craft to ask during your personal  conference with each instructor. Prepare yourself  for long days of writing, reading and critiquing.

How will I get to UC San Diego? You must make your own travel arrangements.  The San Diego International Airport website has useful travel links. Workshop participants will be given access to an online group so they can coordinate their travel arrangements, if they wish.

What do I take with me to the workshop? Start a list of the things you cannot live without for six weeks. The first item should be a computer with wireless capability, preferably a laptop so you can use it anywhere on campus (we provide internet access). A computer is required for participation in the workshop.

When will the workshop tuition, enrollment, and housing fees be due? All fees must be paid by May 15. Payment will be in the form of a cashier's check made out to the UC Regents (sorry; credit cards will not be accepted). More information about fees will be emailed to applicants upon acceptance to the workshop.
